First grade loved celebrating Polar Express Day! They read the story, learned about the history of the railroad, then took it to the next level with a STEM project. After researching train bridges, they tried their hand at recreating them with classroom materials. Their goal was to create a weight bearing bridge with a drivable deck. Check out our beam bridges, suspension bridges, cable bridges and more!

First grade went on a virtual field trip to the Arctic today! They learned the North Pole received its name from the magnetic pole that pulls all compass arrows north. Then, they created their own. They researched how Arctic animals stay warm, and they learned how someone prepared themselves to go outside in negative temperatures. After, they bundled up and did an Arctic walk to sightsee too! After, they learned about igloos. Next, they built igloos out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Last, they watched the northern lights.

Miss Amey's 7th grade Reading class learned about theme, character development, and symbolism while reading the holiday classic, A Christmas Carol!

It was wonderful to see so many families at our Annual Winter Storybook Hour. We want to give a big shout out to our PTO for their help organizing this event, to our special teacher readers, wrappers, and servers, to the local Girl Scouts who set up our card station, and to Matt Klinger Photography for brining us fun family photos. You can view the gallery and find your family photos here.
The Newport State Police graciously hosted students from Greenwood, Newport, and West Perry on December 8th. They showed students around the building including different careers that could be attained by working through the PSP. They are hosting the Citizens Police Academy for our students in 2026. If you know a student in grades 10-12 who has an interest in any area of law enforcement and who would like to participate, please see Mrs. Brummer for more information.

Our light show is out on display! First and fifth grade students worked together to create unique snowmen after reading "Snowmen At Night". The kiddos worked together to first sketch their design. Then, they used chalk to sketch it on a mini black billboard. After, they used special tools to poke holes in the board. Next, they strung the lights in through the back to bring their designs to life. Lastly, they used permanent marker to add color and details to their creations. We are ecstatic about the results!

Students in 10th grade English worked collaboratively to piece together the allegory in George Orwell's novel, Animal Farm. Each student researched a person, event, or idea from the Russian Communist era and determined how it is represented in the novel. Then, they created a slide to share this information with their peers. The students learned from their peers and took notes to get a more comprehensive understanding of the symbolism throughout the entire novel.

This November, GWDES focused on the "A" in ROAR and learned how to ACHIEVE! We learned that an achiever is someone who tries their best, learns from mistakes, and keeps going until they reach their goal. Achievers celebrate their progress, not just the end result!”
Students learned from our State Final Four finishing GHS Field Hockey Team and earned Hat Passes for ROARing throughout the month. Keep up the great work Wildcats!

7th grade students raced their Matchbox cars in Science class to practice calculating average speed.

Sixth grade students modeled the moon phases to better understand and then explain how and why they occur.

Dalton Trude and Tyler Moffitt participated in the GIS Day at Harrisburg University. The students heard speakers from a GIS professional from the Philadelphia Police Department, a river level and flooding expert, and a geography professor and expert in emergency management from Bloomsburg University. They also had the opportunity to learn how to fly drones both indoors and outdoors.

Congratulations to these business students for competing at the DECA District Competition.

The Perry County Career Coordinators meet regularly to provide experiences for our students. If any of the upcoming events would interest your student, please have them contact Mrs. Brummer for more information. Also, a special thank you to our County Commissioners who are in the Spotlight for their consistent support of our students.

I can't tell you how many times I heard "Best lunch ever" today! Thank you to our friends from The Nutrition Group for bringing us this awesome home cooked Thanksgiving meal!

On November 12th, Grace Peters, Taz Dietz, Shelby Strawser, and Charlie Sheaffer attended the PA Restaurant and Lodging Association's Hospitality Career Exploration Workshop at the Lancaster Marriott. Students spent the morning at culinary stations where they got to make food under the direction of chefs and culinary students. They also participated in a workshop for event planning and got to network with industry professionals and learn about job opportunities in the region.
